I love the raised well. was used for watering the garden?
Yes, wells were traditionally used as far back as the Middle Ages in edible gardens to eliminate the need to carry water over long distances.
Is the entire area surrounded by a deer fence? How do they handle deer?
It is surrounded by brick walls, since deer are usually (but not always) reluctant to jump over barriers they can’t see through.
We have visited twice and are always in awe of these beautiful gardens. 🙂
Today, 6/15/14, we visited Mt Vernon and the boxwood is gone from the lower garden – it was there in April. Can you explain why it was removed?
Hmmm…very interesting question. We will contact them tomorrow (the office is closed on weekends) to find out why and let you know. Thanks for asking. 🙂
